Abstract EN

this study is an attempt to understand the reality and to evaluate them the horizons of the democratic transformation that is under way in Algeria.

In order to do so, the study needs to take into account the difficulties related to the social and cultural structures that have faced this process.

These difficulties have generated a number of conflicts that have evolved into a serious crisis which is threatening the very existence of both the society and the state.

These conflicts are of two types: some of them were already there in a latent state and were revived by the political pluralism, but under new forms such as the loyalty to ethnic, cultural, religious, and regional identities.

Some others are new and have come as a result to the country’s orientation towards the system of market economy.

Such an orientation has caused the impoverishment of most social classes due to the state’s failure to keep up with its social responsibilities.

Most studies that dealt with the democratic transformation in Algeria, so far, attributed its drawbacks to the fact that the political system would not let go power and would not concede to any pacific shift of such power - which is definitely true.

However, this study will attempt to account for such drawbacks in term of the contradictions that exist within the society itself.

This pluralist society tends to make use of its racial, cultural, and religious extremist tendencies to express its democratic aspirations.

Consequently, any methodological study that is likely to bring about an accurate understanding of the democratic transformation in Algeria should be focused on the internal contradictions of the society and the way they were activated by political pluralism and the absence of the state from the economic arena due to the pressure exerted by the market economy.

This has resulted in a wave of violence that has destroyed all that the country had achieved in terms of development, and has turned it into a hindrance to the process of demoralisation.
