A comparison of fluoride release from different fluoride-releasing restorative materials

Aim of study : This study evaluated the fluoride-releasing properties of various fluoride-releasing restorative materials.

Materials and Methods : The materials that investigated are conventional Glass-ionomer cement (Kavitan plus), Modified resin glass ionomer cement (photac-fill quick), compomer (Dyract), fluoride-releasing resin composite (crystal Essence).

Ten samples were obtained from each material The amount of fluoride released from these materials, in artificial saliva, were then measured at 5, 8-and 12 weeks using a fluoride combined electrode (9609 BN-Orion) coupled to an ion analyzer (SA- 720 Procyon).

Results : The results showed that, all of fluoride-releasing materials were released fluoride, however, the difference between these materials is the amount of releasing fluoride from each of these materials.

The conventional GIC shown to release the largest amount of fluoride while the fluoride-releasing composite released the least amount of fluoride.
