Aim of the Study : This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Cefotaxime on the incidence of dry socket.

Material and Methods : 60 patients were included in this study, and they divided into control group (30 patients) and experimental group (30 patients) in control group a piece of gel foam only is placed in the extraction socket.

While in the experimental group a gel foam saturated with Cefotaxime is placed into the socket.

The patients were examined 4 days postoperatively.

Results : in the control group who received gel foam 20 % developed dry socket while experimental group only 3.3 % of patients developed dry socket.

Conclusion : It was concluded that gel foam saturated with Cefotaxime was effective in the reduction of dry socket in the subjects who had undergone extraction of their teeth.
