Sociodemographic status, life style and psychosocial factors associated with chronic periodontitis in Iraqi adults

Abstract EN

Aim of this study : To understand the overall effects of life style and psychosocial factors on chronic periodontitis to provide a rationale for preventive programs in the future.

Material and Method : A120 controls and 120 test chronic periodontitis matched by sex were enrolled in this cross sectional study ; a complete dental examination was performed for both groups.

Semi structured questionnaires were conducted to collect life style and psychosocial variables.

The Chi square was applied to assess the effect of these factor with chronic periodontitis.

Results : The age was determents of chronic periodontal disease, also unemployed and illiterate patients were greater in test group than controls, the differences were statistically significant.

Results were 56.7 %, 15 % compared to 37.5 % and 1.76 % respectively.

Marital status also showed a significant difference between the two groups, where as for the single one with no children it was high in control.

Results were 43.37 % and 50 % compared to 26.67 % and27.5 % respectively.

This was also the case in anxiety features the effect on chronic periodontitis was also significant.

In testing the life style of the patients, smoking history and vegetable consumption also had a significant effect on chronic periodontitis.

In eating meat and snack the frequency of eating seems to be important as well as the frequency of tooth brush Conclusion : This study verified that social -demographic status, life style, stressful events, oral hygiene variables were all significantly associated with chronic periodontal disease in Iraq.
