Skin manifestations of HIVAIDS in Sudanese patients

Background Coetaneous manifestation are common clinical findings among HIV / AIDS patients.

No study was done before on this topic.

Objective The objective of this work was to study the frequency and distribution of coetaneous manifestations in HIV-positive Sudanese patients.

Methodology Military personnel with HIV sero-positive and coetaneous manifestations coming to dermatology department of Omdurman Military Hospital, Sudan in period July 1997– May 2003 were included in this study.

Results A total number of thirty patients were included in this study.

The most common skin disease were bacterial infection (13.3 %), fungal infections including, T.

cruris (6.7 %), T.

corporis (3.3 %) and oral candidiasis (3.3 %), viral infection, including generalized Molluscum contagiosum (6.7 %) and Herpes zoster (3.3 %).

Sexually transmitted infection (Lymphogranuloma venereum) form 10.0 % of the group.

The noninfectious conditions associated with HIV / AIDS includes Kaposi’s sarcoma (10.0 % ) and skin lymphoma (3.3 %), seborrhoeic dermatitis (10.0%), psoriasis (10.0 % ), papular pruritic rash (10.0 %) and vitiligo (3.3 %).

Conclusions Infectious conditions, such as bacterial, fugal and viral infection are fairly common, as other non-infectious conditions like, seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and Kaposi’s sarcoma in Sudanese HIV / AIDS patients.
