In the period from 1986 to 2001 a total of 32 patients with carcinoma of esophagus and gastric cardia were seen and operated on in Teaching Hospital, Basrah.
Of the patients, 24 were males (75 %) and 8 females (25 %), age range was 20-75years.
Esophageal resections were done in 28 patients while 4 patients underwent palliative procedure (intubation).
The type of surgery depends on the location of the tumor.
Postoperative hospitalisation ranged from 6 to 18 days, the main postoperative complications were chest infection (43 %), anastamotic leak occurs in 9.3 %.
Mortality rate was 15.6 %.
