Study of patients with indoor pulmonary tuberculosis

Pulmonary Tuberculosis is transmitted from patients to contacts by droplets, which are expelled from the patients by coughing, talking or sneering.

On the other hand close and long contact is required to develop the infection in a susceptible person and usually in a closed environment, whether this closed environment is inside the house, working place, school, or prison.

This study was undertaken in the TB center in Basrah over a six months (March to September 2001) where by all new cases diagnosed to have PTB were interrogated for the presence of a case or cases of PTB inside the house and full information about the social and economic status of the family were analysed to highlight this important route of transmission in our country.

A total of 232 cases were diagnosed to have active PTB during the period of 'the study, out of 'that there were 68 cases who admit to have close contact with PTB cases inside their house.
