Abstract EN

This study aimed to identify super league soccer player’s perceptions of the psychological climate prevailing in their sports clubs as well as identifying their attitudes towards sportsmanship according to their clubs climate, rank in the league and playing positions in the field (attackers versus defenders) .

A descriptive methodology was used.

Data was collected through a questionnaire from a purposive sample (N=90).

The most important results include: The psychological climate of super league soccer clubs is perceived as more oriented towards “performance” than “mastery”.

No significant differences appeared in the general index of sportsmanship between those who perceived their club climate as mainly performance oriented and those who perceived it as mainly mastery oriented.

There are significant differences in two sportsmanship dimensions “respecting the rules and officials” and the “negative approach towards the practice of sport” indicating more positive attitudes shown by those who perceived the climate as mastery oriented.

there are significant differences in the general index of sportsmanship and in the dimensions of “respecting the rules and officials” and “negative approach towards the practice of sport” indicating better levels of sportsmanship for players playing in teams ranking in the bottom when compared to their counterparts in leading teams.

Defense and offence soccer players don’t differ significantly in their general attitudes towards sportsmanship but they do differ in “respecting the rules and officials” and “negative approach towards the practice of sport”.

Differences favor defenders.

Players regardless of their perceptions of the psychological climate, teams rank in the league and position in the field reported general positive attitudes towards sportsmanship.

Some recommendations and suggestions were presented.
