English Abstract

In this research, the design optimization of structural concrete beams using Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique is presented.

The optimization techniques in general enable designers to find the best design for the structure under consideration.

The best design of a structure means the most economic structure without impairing the functional purposes the structure is supposed to serve. Genetic algorithms (GA) belong to the family of evolutionary algorithms (EA).

GA is an iterative procedure that is motivated by the ‘survival of the fittest’ principle of Darwinian Theory of natural evolution. Two types of structural beams are studied, namely : simple reinforced concrete beams and simple prestressed concrete beams.

These beams are designed according to the requirements of the ACI 318-05 code.

The cost function comprises the cost of concrete and the cost of reinforcement. Two computer models have been developed for the structural design optimization of reinforced and prestressed concrete simple beams using MATLAB software.

The results of these optimization models were compared with the results of another classical optimization models.

The classical optimization models were developed based on EXCEL software spreadsheets which use the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) classical optimization method. In order to validate the developed GA models for both the RC and the PC cases, two numerical examples were applied and the results are studied A comparison study between one of the classical optimization techniques, namely the GRG and one of the heuristic techniques, namely the GA was carried out in this research. This comparison showed the superiority of the GA technique over the classical GRG technique with regard to our numerical examples.
