العبارة وحدة لغویة أكبر من الكلمة و أصغر من الجملة، تصاغ بالقوانین النحویة للغة، و هي غالبا ما تكون جملة فرعیة تابعة للجملة الأساسیة، تلعب أدوارا نحویة مختلفة ك (الفاعل و المفعول و ظرف الزمان و ظرف المكان ..الخ).
هناك أنواع مختلفة من العبارة لكل نوع دوره و تركیبه الخاص بها.
من خلال تجربتي في تدریس اللغة الإنكلیزیة لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود في مختلف المدارس المتوسطة و الإعدادیة و المعاهد تبین لي أن مناهج مفردات اللغة الإنكلیزیة لا تتطرق إلى هذا الجزء المهم من قواعد اللغة الإنكلیزیة بشكل وافي.
هذا البحث محاولة لتبیان بعض جوانب العبارة في اللغة الإنكلیزیة من حیث أنواعها و وظائفها و أدوارها على أمل أن یجلب انتباه مصممي مفردات مناهج اللغة الإنكلیزیة للاهتمام بهذا الجانب الأساسي في قواعد اللغة الإنكلیزیة لتطویر العملیة التعلیمیة للنهوض بمستوى تعلیم و تعلم اللغة الإنكلیزیة.
