English Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the code-switching between Arabic and English in the speech of aviation field personnel at Amman civil airport .This was attempted through investigating the aviation personnel about this phenomenon, the reasons ,motivations, affects ,advantages and disadvantages in the work of aviation personnel .To achieve the purpose of this study some meetings were conducted randomly with some personnel in order to note how they switch besides two questionnaires, and the following research questions were addressed ; 1.

Why do the personnel of aviation switch between Arabic and English and how and when does code – switching occur? 2.

How can engineers, technical teams and pilots maintain a certain language or switch to another through using code – switching ? 3.

How do stewards employ CS while communicating with passengers? 4.

Does CS affect the fluency of aviation personnel in Arabic ? 5.

Are there any statistical significant differences on CS due to the job? 6.

Are there any statistical significant differences on CS due to the gender? 7.

What are the attitude of the personnel towards CS ? The population of the study consisted of the male and female personnel which was estimated as 200 personnel in aviation field at Amman civil airport.

To achieve the purposes of the study, fifteen -item questionnaire was designed by the researcher and distributed to the subjects of the study.

The findings of the study showed that CS phenomenon has wide popularity in this field which has its reasons, affects.

The findings, also, revealed that the percentages of using the phenomenon of CS in the aviation field was high. In light of the findings of the study, a set of suggestions and recommendations were proposed to the Academy of Arabic language, policymakers, collection of Arabic language, researchers, and all who care about Arabic to be the dominant language as the mother language, and how much using the loan words ,phrases, and expressions.
