English Abstract

Safety is the state of being "safe", the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, occupational, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable.

Safety can also be defined to be the control of recognized hazards to achieve an acceptable level of risk.

In this work a comprehensive filed has been done to study the safety measures in Mutah university facilities and compared these measures to the international standards.

The results showed that there are a great shortage in the safety equipments in all facilities besides the commitment of people to follow the safety regulations were very weak.

The study also showed that the shortage in the University facilities in comparison with standards were as follows : carpentry workshop about 87 %, welding workshop about 82 %, lathing workshop about 83 %, plumbing workshop about 91 %, electrical unit about 82 %, construction unit about 100 %, civilian work unit about 100%, transport and mechanic unit about 100 %, department of supply about 91 %, agricultural services about 81 %, water supply unit about 100 %, science chemical laboratories about 71 %, engineering chemical laboratories about 69 %, microbiological laboratories about 71 %, asphalt and road construction materials about 80%, the average shortage of safety equipments in all workshops, service units and laboratories were 91 %.

From the results analysis of the above shortages of safety equipments and due to carelessness of employees or misunderstanding of safety issues which contributed in rising the annual rate of accidents to about 33% as a minor incident with estimated cost of 1434 (JD), about 38 % as a medium accident with estimated cost of 4400 (JD), about 29 % as a dangerous accident with estimated cost of 15699.5 (JD).

Also it was found that the average cost for the all types of accidents for three years (2008-2010) is about 23768.5 (JD).

Finally all above costs and accidents can be reduced effectively if the employees in charge apply the standards regulations and measurements of safety.

A software was designed to help in measuring and counting the costs and accidents for each year for all employees working in Mu'tah University.
