English Abstract
Cadmium, lead, zinc, copper, manganese and iron were analyzed in soil, air and plants by atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
Samples were taken from Zarqa scrapyard of discarded vehicles.
Elevated levels of the studied elements were found in topsoil samples in the scrapyard area compared with the background values and decreased with depth.
The elevated levels of heavy metals in scrapyard soil indicate that discarded vehicles are considered as a major source for these elements.
Soil from scrapyard has been analyzed by sequential extraction procedure.
The results show that the Fe-Mn oxide fraction is the main fraction for Pb, Mn and Zn, while Cd is concentrated in the first three extraction steps.
This indicates greater mobility and potential bioavailability of Cd.
The most important fraction for Fe is the residual fraction.
The significant difference in the levels of heavy metals which was found between the washed and unwashed shoots could be related with the impacting of atmospheric deposition of soil particles or particles emitted from the motor vehicles and tire incineration.
