English Abstract

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) systems allow the transmission of multiple channels over a single fiber by encoding each channel with a different optical wavelength.

Compact and cost-effective wavelength multiplexing and demultiplexing devices are needed for combining the different WDM channels on the transmitter side and splitting them at the receiver.

Since the structure of graded-index optical fiber refers to the fact that the refractive index of the core gradually decreases farther from the center of the core, this thesis exploits this property of graded index structure and investigates the performance of graded-index structure using WDM with high spatial shift between wavelengths (third window) which result from the wavelength-dependent with refractive index for multiplexing or demultiplexing multiple WDM channels.

The work in this thesis is emphasized on studying most of the parameters that effects on the spatial shift between adjacent wavelengths inside graded index structure (i.e.

refractive index profile (α), index difference (Δ), structure thickness (a), incident angle (Өi) and channel spacing (Δλ)) in order to improve the work of such structure as a MUX / DEMUX device.

The spatial shift between adjacent channels is efficient for Mux / Demux in WDM, because by this spatial shift we can avoid the crosstalk between channels and also minimize the channel spacing as in DWDM.
