English Abstract

In the present study, the effect of antecedent factors on employee engagement was investigated.

The level of employee engagement in Jordanian publicly-held corporations was measured, and the effect of employee engagement on corporate performance was also investigated. This study is a deductive and quantitative study where data were collected using both a questionnaire and the corporations’ financial records.

The results indicate that employees working in the Jordanian publicly-held corporations are characterized as not-engaged.

It was found that 43 percent of the employees are not-engaged, 14 percent are actively disengaged, and 40 percent are engaged.

Moreover, it was found that the independent variables (job characteristics, rewards and recognition, supervisor support, distributive justice, resources, outside activities) all have an effect on employee engagement.

Using step-wise regression, it was found that the distributive justice variable has the most impact on employee engagement, followed by rewards and recognition variable, then the supervisor support variable, and these three variables explain 74.6 percent of the variance in the dependent variable.

This study also shows that the employee engagement variable has a significant effect on the corporate performance.

There are no significant differences in the employee engagement in terms of the demographic variables (age, length of service, education), but there are significant differences in the employee engagement in terms gender.

There are significant differences in employee engagement that related to the organizational variables (size, experience, type of business).
