English Abstract

The adsorption of Cd (II) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solution onto olive tree carbon (OTC) and olive stone carbon (OSC) was studied.

Batch adsorption experiment was carried out as a function of metal ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorbent particle size, contact time and temperature.

The adsorption process was found to be pH dependent.

The maximum adsorption of 98.03 % (qe, 4.90 mg / g) for Cd (II) and 98.92 % (qe, 4.95) for Cu (II) by OTC and 98.16 % (qe, 4.91 mg / g) for Cd (II) and 99.32 % (qe, 4.97) for Cu (II) by OSC at 25°C and initial concentration, 50 mg / dm3.

The adsorption process of both metal ions onto both adsorbent follows pseudo-second order equation kinetics.

The activation energies for Cd (II) and Cu (II) adsorption onto OTC were determined to be 19.93 and 25.67 kJ / mol, respectively and for Cd (II) and Cu (II) adsorption onto OSC were 18.06 and 21.15 kJ / mol, respectively.

These value of activation energy indicating that the process is chemical desorption.

The equilibrium data were best fitted by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation over the entire concentration range (50-400 mg / dm3).

The maximum adsorption capacity (Q°) at 25°C was found to be 22.08, 15.97 mg / g for Cd (II) and Cu (II) adsorption onto OTC, respectively and 22.73, 13.44 mg / g for Cd (II) and Cu (II) adsorption onto OSC, respectively.

The determined negative values of AG0, AH0 and AS0 indicated that adsorption process is spontaneous within the range of temperature, exothermic and accompanied by a decrease in the randomness at solid-solution interface.

The effectiveness of the OTC and OSC for Cd (II) and Cu (II) adsorption was compared with other adsorbents reported in the literature.

In general, OTC and OSC showed an acceptable adsorption potential.
