English Abstract
The objective of this Thesis is to study a combination of multilevel modulation (QAM) and a code (Convolutional code) to improve power and bandwidth efficiency simultaneously, so the project lies in the field of "coded modulation" It is well known in communication systems in general and in mobile systems in particular that power and bandwidth are of prime interest.
Multilevel modulations are used to improve bandwidth efficiency of the system at the expense of their power efficiency; using coding without multilevel modulation schemes will improve the power efficiency on the expense of bandwidth efficiency.
The fundamental principle of "coded modulation" is that redundancy should be added to the transmitted signal not by adding additional symbols to the code stream, which would increase its bandwidth, but by increasing "the radix" of the code symbols which means increasing the size of the signaling constellation.
Convolutional code is a very powerful channel coding scheme for wireless mobile communication systems.
The performance of the convolutional code is determined by two parameters - coding rate (Re) and constraint length (u).
The main concern of this project is to analyze a model for the system under investigation, namely convolutional coded, M-ray QAM transmission scheme with different constrain length (u) and coding rate (Re) applied to encoded QAM signals with different values of M.
Within the field of convolutional code, the Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) is adopted in this work where the coding and modulation are combined.
These M-ray-QAM TCM signals are transmitted through different model of channels, and detected using different detection schemes.
In each case, the system performance is evaluated and compared with conventional schemes.
And the results are provided.
