English Abstract

Interference in a wireless radio communication channel has always been a major concern to participating users.

Increased traffic within a limited transmission bandwidth degrades the quality of communication severely.

The hybrid direct sequence / slow frequency hopping spread spectrum (DS / SFH-SS) technique is very robust to combat interference and to allow simultaneous users to share the finite radio spectrum without interfering with one another significantly.

This thesis is divided into two main parts.

Firstly, analytical study for both the channel model and the hybrid DS / SFH system architecture is presented.

The architecture provides the insights into the system design trade-off to be made during the low-power transceiver design process.

Secondly, this thesis investigates the performance of the slotted hybrid DS / SFH- code division multiple access (CDMA) system operating over a multipath Rican fading channel in terms of the bit error probability (BEP), the throughput and the delay of the system.

We consider both quadrature phase shift-keying (QPSK) and differential phase shift-keying (DPSK) modulations.

Maximum ratio combining (MRC) redetection multipath diversity and simple interleaved channel coding for both coherent and no coherent demodulation are employed for improving the performance.

A comparison between the hybrid system and the pure direct sequence system has been made in term of bit error probability to conclude which one is more suitable to use in our network.

This part also investigates the influence of the orthogonality of the spreading code sequence on the system performance by using the MATLAB program.

Results show two important things.

Firstly, for the considered type of channel coding, the use of redetection diversity is still essential for obtaining a satisfactory error performance.

Secondly, the use of spreading code sequence with good cross correlation properties can help in combating the interference and lead to better performance of any CDMA system.
