English Abstract
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a novel idea offering promising solution for optical WDM networks.
It combines the best of optical packet switching and optical circuit switching.
OBS achieves high traffic throughput and high resources utilization by aggregating multiple packets into a single burst.
A control message sent on a separate wavelength to configure the path between the sender and receiver.
After amount of time known as offset time, the burst information is transmitted without needing an acknowledgment from the receiver.
Optical metropolitan area networks are commonly implemented in ring architecture.
In this thesis, the performance of optical burst switching was studied under effect of several access protocols, where the ring consists of N nodes, and each node owns a home wavelength.
Ring nodes are equipped with a fixed transmitter and tunable receiver (FTTR).
The performance of five access protocols (RR / R, RR / P, RR / NP, RR / Token, RR/ACK) was studied in terms of throughput, packet delay, and fairness under varying different parameters such as average arrival rate, maximum burst size, and minimum burst size.
The performance of these protocols were compared by using three types of signaling protocols namely; JET, ODD, and TAW.
Results indicate that there was a relation between throughput, receiver contention, and delay.
In addition to the results that shown the collision free protocols provide a better performance than the other protocols.
