English Abstract
A total of 56 surface soil samples collected on grid bases from the city of Sahab, central Jordan, were investigated for their magnetic material content using the Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM).
This magnetic method can be used as a pollution indicator for heavy metals because they are usually adsorbed to magnetic materials particularly magnetite (Fe304).
Two magnetic parameters were used in this study; the initial magnetic susceptibility (in) and the saturation magnetization (Ms).
The large grain size particles yield more magnetic content than small grain particles, which might be attributed to the lack of pedogensis due to arid climate.
Moreover, / in gave much more obvious signal than Ms.
The results indicate the applicability of these parameters as pollution indicators, and showed the highest / in and Ms are associated with traffic areas than industrial and residential area.
In addition to a positively significant correlation between total heavy metal content with / in and Ms.
This was evident from the high degree of fitness between the distribution maps of / i„ and Ms with the total heavy metal content in the study area.
Moreover, the hysteresis loop and XRD charts reveal the presence of magnetite as the main magnetic mineral phase.
This would conform the anthropogenic source of pollution mainly the vehicles emissions beside frame and brakes corroded materials.
The positive correlation between heavy metal and magnetic parameters was evident by using the index of pollution (IP) method, where the samples of high IP values for % m and Ms are the same samples that have high IP values for total heavy metal content too.
