English Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the types and sources of spelling errors produced by elementary and secondary school students in Al-Karak Directorate of Education.

It also aimed at examining the effect of students' gender and grade level on spelling errors.

The sample of the study consisted of 140 male and female students in the 8th and 11th grades.

They were randomly selected from governmental schools in Al-Karak Directorate of Education in the academic year 2004 / 2005.

The data for this study was collected by identifying spelling errors in the students' composition papers.

The results of the study were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for single regression factor (completely randomized block).

The study concluded that the total corpus of spelling errors made by the students was 455.

Statistical analysis revealed that there was significant difference related to the types of spelling errors, since 74.3 % of errors were made in omission, addition and substitution categories.

In addition, the study concluded that there was no statistically significant difference in spelling errors due to gender at α = 0.05 level.

Finally, it concluded that there was statistically significant difference in spelling errors due to the grade level of the students at α = 0.05 level in favor of the 11th grade who made less spelling errors.

In light of these results, the study provides several pedagogical implications which could hopefully be of use to teachers, researchers and curriculum designers.

It recommends conducting further research to investigate the role of the teacher, the curriculum and the computer in improving or hindering students' spelling ability.
