English Abstract

In this research, a number of field tests are held in Tafila city which is located 200 km south of Amman, programs have been conducted to identify and quantify polluted air emissions from scrap tire burning.

This research is considered to be one of few the researches in this field, if it is not the first one in the country to deal with air pollutants emitted from scrap tire burning.

The results of the field test shows that, the mean concentrations of PM10 for 24 hours is 280(μg / m3), the mean concentrations of smoke in outdoor atmosphere 138.2 (μg / m3), the heavy metals mean concentrations (Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mn Cr, Fe, As, Co), are (2.06, 0.06, 3.0, 0.29, 2.0, 0.2, 0.3, 1.5, 0.3, 0.44 μg / m3) respectively, the mean concentration of NH3, H2S,and SO2 is (149,116, and 72.71) (μg / m3) respectively, The total PAHs mean concentration is 2918 (ng / m³), also the mean concentration of VOCs (BTEX) Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl benzene, m, p, o-Xylene is (9.65, 9.33, 3.0, 31.1 μg / m3) respectively , and Carbon monoxide CO is 35 ppm[40 mg / m³].

Therefore, the available data are fully representative for the potential health risks from exposure to open scrap tire fire emissions.

Integrated scrap tires management, a hierarchy for managing scrap tires, includes scrap tires reduction, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and disposal should be taken into consideration.
