English Abstract

Screening for anti-cancer effects of some medicinal plant extracts on Leukemia cells an investor study Ahmad Mohammad Al-Ja’afreh Mu'tah University, 2008 the effect of four medicinal plants extract P.

granatum (Peel).

R.oficinalis (leaves), I.

chrysographe (bulbs) and Q.

callipinos (leaves) were used against K562 and HL60 cell lines were studied, viability, antioxidant enzymes activity, lipid peroxidation and apoptosis induction.

The total phenolic were measured by Folin–Ciocalteau Assay and expressed as Gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg / g of dry weight (DW).

The total antioxidant capacity was estimated by using 1, 1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 20-azinobis-3 ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulphonic acid (ABTS) assays and expressed as trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) mg /g dry wt (DW Cancer cells proliferation inhibition was dose and time dependant with IC50 : for HL60 and K562 treated with P.

granatum, R.oficinalis, I chrysographe and Q.

callipinos extracts were 30.879,27.434, 7.924 and 34.911 μg / mg protein, and 13.9,16.865,8.787 and 16.345 μg / mg protein respectively A significant difference in antioxidant enzymes activity was found after treatment of HL60 and K562 cell lines with P.

granatum, R.oficinalis, I.

chrysographe and Q.

callipinos extracts.

Also the effect of the plants extract on lipid peroxidation was significant affected after treatment with the plants extract.

These plants have a positive effect on the cancer inhibition and may be due to induction of cells apoptosis.
