English Abstract

-This research aims to evaluate the water quality of Al-Mujeb dam in terms of physiochemical parameters, major ionic content of water and heavy metal content of sediments of Al-Mujeb dam.

In order to achieve these aims, water and sediment samples were collected during winter and summer seasons (2007) from Al-Mujeb dam and around it.

The study show that there are elevated levels of SO4 2-, Cl- and Na+ this attributed to anthropogenic activities nearby the dam site.

High hardness of water of Al- Mujeb dam is related to calcite (CaCO3) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) minerals that are considered the main components of rocks of the study area.

The average levels of heavy metals in sediments were 14888, 17.8, 89, 39, 4.4, 338 and 6.1 mg/kg for Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Mn, and Pb respectively, these results are lower than that observed in Wadi Al-Arab dam.

The values of enrichment factor were 35.5, 3.02, 2.54, 1.26, 1.2 and 0.57 for Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Pb respectively, these values indicate that heavy metals in sediments of Al-Mujeb dam have different anthropogenic and natural sources.

The study also shows that the sediments are polluted with Cd, relatively contaminated with Ni and Zn and uncontaminated with respect to Mn, Pb and Cu.
