English Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of collaborative writing method on improving the writing of EFL ninth grade students at Qassabat Al-Kark Directorate of Education in Jordan.

The study attempted to answer the following questions 1- Does using collaborative writing method have a positive effect on improving ninth grade students' ability to write in English? 2- How does collaborative writing method change students attitudes toward? Writing the population of the study consisted of all female ninth graders at Qassabat Al-Kark Directorate of Education in the academic year 2008-2009.

The sample consisted of 35 ninth grade students at Aiy Secondary School for Girls.

The participants were divided into two groups : experimental group and control group.

Both the experimental and the control group were given four topics to write about based on the textbook of the ninth grade of Jordanian public schools.

After that a posttest was conducted.

The findings of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in all aspects of writing in favor of the experimental group.

With respect to students' attitudes: the results of the individual interviews indicated that they were highly positive.

Recommendations for EFL teachers and for the Ministry of Education in Jordan, and further research were suggested.
