English Abstract

-The present study was conducted to investigate the L2 lexical and syntactic attrition of 29 Jordanian returnee children, and to explore the factors that contributed to that attrition.

2 types of measurements were used: 1.

Graded Level Vocabulary Test.

2.

A story telling task.

3.

A questionnaire.

4.

Interviews were administered in order to triangulate the data.

The results of the vocabulary tests showed that the samples' vocabulary knowledge remained intact; whereas in the story telling task, samples mix verb tenses, and used more satellite-framed language with locative setting descriptions.

This result indicated that samples' bilingual lexicon was different from monolingual Arab and monolingual English speakers.

Length of residence, age of return, attitudes and motivation were strong factors affect L2 maintenance.

Age of arrival was moderately related to L2 maintenance, whereas incubation period and cultural identity didn’t have much relation to L2 maintenance.
