English Abstract
-This study aimed at finding out the relationship between motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic) and the academic achievement in English of the Saudi 9th graders at Tabouk District during the academic year 2009/2010 and whether those students intrinsically or extrinsically motivated through answering the questions of the study: (1) What kind of motivation are the Saudi intermediate students characterized with (intrinsic or extrinsic)? (2) Are there any statistically significant differences (α ≤ 0.05) between students' motivation and their English language achievement?.
To achieve the purpose of the study and answer its questions, the researcher designed a 23 Likert -type item questionnaire directed to the students of the 9th Graders in Tabouk public schools of the academic year 2009/2010.
The study sample consisted of 251 students who were divided into two groups according to the official records obtained: high achievers (98) students and low achievers (153) students.
The respondents’ responses to the questionnaire were computed and analyzed using the SPSS program using: means, standard deviations, percentages, Cronbach Alpha and t-test.
The findings of the present study revealed that the surveyed Saudi students were extrinsically motivated.
The findings also revealed a strong correlation between extrinsic motivation and achievement.
In the light of the results of the study, a set of suggestions and recommendations was stated to curriculum designers and to the concerned official staff in the Ministry of Education.
