English Abstract
-Mobile IP protocol enables mobile users to roam transparently in any network.
However, the protocol has its disadvantages when mobile hosts rate of handovers increases within the foreign administrative domain and from one foreign domain to another; because it does not support low latency during handover mechanism that allow a mobile user to change its point of attachment from one network to another and continue its ongoing data transmition with lowest disruption.
A number of approaches have been taken in order to deal with this problem and reduce the handover latency.
One approach was the introduction of micro mobility protocols which aimed to improve roaming of mobile users within network domain.
This thesis provides an overview of the Mobile IP schemes and their shortcomings regarding handover latency, and the fact that they are not optimized to handle Intra-domain mobility.
An overview of handover mechanism in four of the most popular micro-mobility schemes has been provided (Hieratical MIP, TeleMIP, Cellular IP, and Hawaii).
General micro mobility routing model that contains the essential features of micro mobility routing schemes which related to handover and traffic rerouting was assumed.
Comparisons were made between the MIP and micro mobility schemes.
The goal of the performance study is to demonstrate the improvements of using micro mobility routing schemes over MIP for Intra domain handovers, and to demonstrate that micro mobility routing performs better because of the lower latency, less update packets sent through network, and less access to mobile host home agent.
Further enhancements on micro mobility routing are suggested to decrease sent data through network layers and improve performance of micro mobility network.
