English Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that appears in the first 3-years of life and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.

The exact causes of these abnormalities remain unknown, but this is a very active area of research.

Since the first reports describing childhood autism, there have been several attempts to find a common cause or biochemical marker among the many children that display symptoms of autism.

This study was done to establish a relation between the effect of homocysteine, vitamin B12, folic acid, fasting sugar, and lipid profile in serum of some children with autism (27 patients) in Jordan with those of healthy matched controls (28 normal) with age range 4-12 year, in an attempt to find a possible cause behind autism and a possible guide for treatment.

The results demonstrate that the mean serum levels in autistic patients were increased insignificantly for homocysteine while significantly (P < 0.05) increased for folic acid and B12, but insignificant decreased for total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, triglyceride and very low density lipoprotein while significant (P < 0.05) decrease in fasting serum sugar and high density lipoprotein, as compared with their matched control for age, sex and body mass index, knowing that all the parameters measured were within normal range levels.

Further future studies are needed.
