English Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the preparation and characterization of Schiff base ligands derived from the condensation of 2, 6-diformylpyridine, 2- Pyridinecarboxaldehyde and salicylaldehyde with four different diamantes namely, 2, 6-diaminopyridine (dap), 1, 2-phenylendiamine (daPh), trans-1, 2- diaminocyclohexane (dach), and ethylenediamine (en).

The Schiff base ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, melting points, FTIR, UV-vis., 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR.

Also, the structure of the Schiff base, N, N`-(bis (pyridine-2-yl) formylidene) ethane-1,2-diamine (L5) has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The non-covalent supramolecular chemistry involved in the crystal structure of this ligand has been carefully investigated The Schiff base ligands are reacted with some transition metal ions using direct reaction or a template method.

The metal ions used are Pd (II) Pt (II), Pd (IV), and Pt (IV).

The formula obtained for the complexes are : PdC20H16N2O2Cl2, PdC20H15N2O2.BF4, PdC20H16N2O2Br2, PdC20H22N2O2Cl2, PdC20H22N2O2Br2, PdC20H20N2O2.2H2O, PdC18H20N4Cl2, Pd2C18H20N4Br4.H2O, Pt2C18H20N4Cl4.1.5PhCN, PtC18H20N4Br2, PdC16H16N2O2Cl2, PdC16H16N2O2Br2, PdC16H16N2O2 (BF4)2, Pd2C14H14N4Cl4, Pd2C14H14N4Br4, PtC14H14N4Cl2, PtC14H14N4Br2, PdC19H15N3O2Br2.PhCN.H2O, Pd2C17H13N5Cl4.3CH3CN.2H2O, PdC17H13N5 (BF4) 2.CH3CN.3H2O, PtC17H13N5Cl2, PtC17H13N5Br2, PdC17H13N5Cl4.0.5H2O, PtC17H13N5Cl4.0.5H2O.

The isolated compounds are characterized on the basis of their melting points, elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance, FTIR and electronic absorption spectra.
