English Abstract

An experimental investigation on a synthetic wastewater system containing 500 ppm emulsified oil, 500 ppm of suspended particles (powdered activated carbon and glass powder) less than 50 µm, and 40 ppm dissolved phenol (as a representative chemical) has been carried out using the Multistage Loop Flow MSTLFLO flotation column.

The column consists of three stages of 70 cm long, its diameter 10 cm, the total height of column is 225cm .Three draft tubes are used inside column each of 50 cm long placed cocentrally, where three cone baffles are used to separate between stages.

The loop flow action in the MSTLFLO column provides favorable hydrodynamic conditions, which promotes local in-stage mixing and enhances the bubble-particle contacts, where gas holdup , liquid circulation velocity, frother feeding location were studied.

Two types of frother were used (2-Ethyl Hexanol and Methyl Isobutyl Carbonyl) in concentrations 5, 10, 15, 20 ppm, where 2-EH gave higher gas holdup and removal efficiency at specific operation conditions than MIBC.

Results show that the separation efficiencies of emulsified oil is 93.6 % and for fine panicles 97.3 % for PAC and 98.3% for glass powder and for phenol 96.3 %.

Thus, the potential application of MSTLFLO process for simultaneous removal of mixed pollutants from industrial wastewater has been demonstrated, The rate of separations in MSTLFLO column obeys the non-linear kinetics.

The kinetic constants are correlated in terms of a four-parameter (gas holdup, bubble size, frother concentration, and superficial gas velocity) for each pollutant individually as in the following correlations : k0 = 1.0978-Vg0.887786 * Cf0.135977 * Ɛg 0.004232 * db-0.183345, R=0.97 Kph = 1.027047 * VR0.015483* Cf0.205899 * Ɛg0.056108 *db-0.050414, R=0.93 Kp = 0.492226 * VR0.214597 * Cf0.144048 * Ɛg0.105403 * db-0.215348, R = 0.91 Kg = 0.80579 * VR0.057643 * Cf0.2048 * Ɛg0.0088881 *DB-0.04051, R = 0.93 5ppm < Cf <20ppm 1cm / sec < Vg < 4cm / sec 0.8mm < db < 4mm
