English Abstract

-Membranes have gained an important place in chemical technology and are used in a wide range of applications.

This investigation has studied the effect of operating conditions such as temperature, trans-membrane pressure and solute concentration on the separation performance of (PVC/ PS) hollow fiber membrane, which was prepared in the laboratory from 15% (PVC) and 2% (PS) using phase inversion method.

An attempt was done to investigate the ability of PVC/PS hollow fiber membrane for ultrafiltration application.

Polyvinyl porrilydone (PVP) was used as a solute in order to measure the (PVP) rejection of the (PVC /PS) hollow fiber membrane .A mathematical model is built up in order to measure the permeation flux of the (PVC /PS) hollow fiber membrane.

Besides, (PVC /PS) hollow fiber membrane is used for pretreatment of Tigers River in order to remove suspensions, clay, silt, finely divided organic and inorganic matter, soluble colored organic compounds, plankton and microscopic organisms before the final purification system.

It was found that permeation flux increased from (18.94 l/m2.hr) to (33.05 l/m2.hr) and with increase in temperature from (10℃) to (30℃) also it increase from (33.05 l/m2.hr) to (87.5 l/m2.hr) with increase in pressure from (1bar) to (3bar) but permeation flux decreased from (12.20 l/m2.hr) to (17.97 l/m2.hr) with increase solute concentration from (1000ppm) to (2500ppm).

(PVP) rejection was (99.93%) using (2500ppm) of (PVP) and that was in the range of UF application.

Based on the experimental result of the permeation flux fiber membrane, it was shown that the model calculated values were in a good agreement with the experimental values.
