English Abstract

-Power loss minimization is a target to any engineering task, particularly when it concerns electrical power.

Distribution system loss minimization has been achieved via proper system design and management.

Capacitor sizing and placement plus the reconfiguration strategies are among the control tools to achieve loss reduction.

Reconfiguration, i.e.

altering the distribution system topography also aid in system load balancing.

For any practical distribution system to be reconfigured, the number of constraints and objectives along with variables produce a fairly huge combinatorial optimization problem.

Many heuristic and stochastic optimization techniques have been used in the literature to solve the reconfiguration problem A Tabu Search, and a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms are adapted to solve the distribution system reconfiguration problem.

Validation of the algorithms is done via application to standard systems of well documented results .Three standard test systems were considered, and implementing the algorithms mentioned above produced almost 100% results match.

The validated algorithms are then used to solve a reconfiguration case of a realistic distribution system.

It is Al-Khalij substation, four feeders, 102 bus, and 11kV distribution system.

Comprehensive series of simulation studies revealed the applicability and suitability of the above mentioned optimization algorithms to solve the reconfiguration problem.
