English Abstract

The deflection of the femoral head of artificial total hip prostheses (elastic ball and rigid socket system) was estimated through the analysis based on elastohydrodynamie theory.

The classic surface profile of the head was calculated by two methods; Herdsman theory at the contact zone and the spherical harmonics method, the lateral was tested as a new applicable method in elasticity field to some limited extent (n=0 to 5) and verified by using the results of the first method as a boundary conditions.

Two samples of results were compared with those produced by Mabuchi and Sasada's, 1990 as a previous workers in this field, a good agreement was found in film thickness (h) and angle position (9 ) values about (97 %) with Herdsman method and (85 %) with Spherical Harmonics method.

This slight difference in results with Herdsman method due to their different adapted calculation formula for the ball deflection, for spherical harmonics method in addition of that the effect of low values of (n) was affected but for higher values this deviations will disappear which shown as well via present work.

Using the numerical values of typical commonly used prostheses.

It was checked for normal gait cycle ; the effect of body weights, squeeze time, ball sizes, radial clearances, and materials on the surface profile of the femoral head was examined with aid of two computer programs writing for this purpose, as this will help to select the suitable parameters for the design of the human artificial hip joint.
