English Abstract
Foaming is an undesirable phenomenon in chemical reactors because it strongly decreases the liquid residence time and in hydrocracking reactors promotes the formation of coke resulting in high deficiency of reactor performance.
In this project, we studied the effects of various operating parameters (i.e.
superficial gas and liquid velocities, type and size of solid particles, volume percentage of particles loaded in the column) on the foam fraction and also to investigate a process for foam suppression in the slurry bubble column.
The liquid phase used was a mixture of water and 1 % wt.
glycerin.
Results showed that a foamy regime appeared above the bubbly mixture when the gas velocity was greater than a critical value.
At any fixed gas velocity, foam may be eliminated by increasing the liquid velocity.
Results demonstrated that the foam fraction decreases with increasing solid loading in the column, but it increases with increasing particle diameter.
In the present work a chemical surface treatment method was utilized to convert the hydrophilic particles into hydrophobic.
The fluid mechanism of foam suppression with hydrophilic particles was enhanced by a direct attack on the foam by hydrophobic particles.
(I.e.
hydrophobic particles are more effective in retaining liquid than the hydrophilic particles).
The effects of the operating parameters on the axial concentration profiles of the solid particles were also presented.
