English Abstract

Most of the south of Iraq areas are polluted by oil due to the multiple oil wells, the oil expIoStation, damaged storage tanks and pipelines, natural seepage and the crude oil spills during the war.

Therefore it is necessary to investigate the geolechnical properties of soil contaminated by crude oil for engineering purposes.

An extensive laboratory testing program was performed on fine grained soil brought up from Al \ Samawa-Depot site.

The program consisted of two parts ; the first, represents the routine laboratory tests carried out on clean and contaminated soil samples to determine, index properties, compaction, permeability, compressibility and shear strength characteristics, the second part represents a laboratory model tests carried out to evaluate the bearing capacity and settlement.

The contaminated samples were prepared by mixing the soil with crude oil for the amounts of 4,8,12, and 16 % by dry weight. The results showed that the crude oil contamination decreased the liquid limit and plastic limit values.

The drop was significantly high for liquid limit (48,1 %} and slight for plastic limit.

(24.2 %).

The contaminated soil also indicated a lower maximum dry density (MOD) and optimum moisture content (OMC) when compared with uncontaminated soil.

The maximum diy unit weight decreased from 17.25 to 16.7 kN / m3 while the OMC dropped from 18 to 5.4 %, A reduction in permeability was observed, as decreased from 1.5 x 10-5 to 2.94x10-6 cm / sec.

The cohesion (C)was clearly effected by the increase crude oil content, the (G) values for uncontaminated soil was 162 kPa and then dropped to 42 kPa at crude oil conterit of 16 %.

The internal friction angle values for tin contaminated soil was 24.22° and then increased to 32.2° at crude oil content of 16 %.

Due to the increase of organic matter with the increase of crude oil content, the compression index was found to be higher for the contaminated soil, The results of the laboratory contaminated model showed increase in Ultimate bearing capacity with increase of crude oil content up to 8 % then a decrease with further increase of crude oil content.
