English Abstract

Digital geotechnical maps are widespread nowadays due 10 the existence of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) which integrated with remote sensing (RS) technique.

These maps provide a powerful database and strong visual presentation of geotechnical data. In this respect.

the purpose of this study is to prepare geotechnical maps of Basrah city Through employing the capabilities of G1S and remote sensing techniques.

In addition to that, several empirical correlations are proposed to evaluate the soil properties of the study area. The research is performed in several stages that started with the collection oil a satellite image within the visible bands of the study area, applying the geometric correction and performing image enhancements hy using ERDAS software to investigate the reflectance characteristics of soil surface.

Then the collection of laboratory tests reports of bore holes is conducted in the study area and projecting their location as a layer using ArcGIS software alter determining their position using a GPS instrument.

The results of this study emphasize the possibility of producing digital geotechnical maps by using ArcGIS software that represents the distribution of the geotechnical properties for study region Basrah District Center in new perspective.

which may lead to a simple identification and quick access of those properties, such as allowable bearing capacity, physical properties and compressibility properties, etc.

The results show that the depth of fill in the study region range between (0.0-4.5) m.

bearing capacity (30-60) kN / nr and liquidity index (-0.811-1,215) along with many properties. An empirical correlation has been developed to estimate the shear strength for Basrah soil at any depth for three zones with coefficients of correlations R2 0.854.

O.843 and 0.449 respectively.

Two correlations arc obtained by relating the normalized shear strength to liquidity index and water content for both zone I and zone II.

Other correlations are obtained by relating the compression index with soil property to evaluate the compressibility for Basrah soils, the best relationship is obtained by relating the compression index with in-situ void ratio for zone I and III that have (R2 = 0.744 and 0.799).

which indicates a good estimation to evaluate the compressibility of these soils.
