English Abstract

The present study is conducted with the objective of evaluating the traffic performance within a selected CBD area in Baghdad city.

Furthermore, several improvement proposals to overcome the traffic operation problems are designed and tested for the current and future conditions.

The selected study area includes two parts of Ring Road No.

(1) in Baghdad city, the first part (eastern part) is represented by three segments of Mohammed Al-Kassim expressway, whereas, the second part (northern part) extends from existing Al-Quten Al-Tibe intersection which is located on Safy Al-Din Al-Hilli arterial street, to join 14-July arterial street at existing Al-Shalchiya intersection.

This part of ring road includes seven signalized intersections.

' To achieve the aforementioned requirements, several types of data have been collected by using digital video camera and manual counters, these data include traffic volume, free-flow speed, and geometric characteristics.

The analysis and evaluation stages are performed according to the Highway Capacity Manual methodology through the use of HCS-2000 software.

The results of this study reveal that the selected traffic facilities currently undergo serious degradation causes of breakdown conditions.

Thus, urgent considerations must be given regarding the upgrading of the level of service by implementing the tested improvement proposals.

Four improvement proposals were studied in the present research ; the first proposal is the time optimization, the second proposal is the increasing the number of lanes, the third proposal is the combination of the first two proposals, and the fourth proposal is overpasses construction.

And the analysis shows that the fourth proposal was the best one.
