English Abstract

There are many protocols that are dedicated for using inside the biomedical stations as Health Level Seven (HL-7) protocol and Digital imaging and Communication in Medecine (DICOM) protocol. The DICOM standard is implemented in this thesis and the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) reference model is used to implement the DICOM network.

The Architecture of the implemented network consists of five layers ; The Application Layer with DICOM Message Service Element (DIMSE) protocol , Upper Layer with DICOM Upper Layer protocol, Transport Layer with TCP protocol, Network Layer with IP protocol , and finally the Physical Layer which can be use any standard physical layer protocol such as Ethernet , Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) , and Asyncronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol. The Micosoft Visual Basic 6.0 programming language is used to implement the programs, and they work under Windows Me operating system. The programs- were excuted over two personal computers interconnected via an 100 mbps Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN).

One of the personal computer represents the Requestor (Client) and the other one represent the Acceptor t Server).

The DICOM standard has been improved by adding a new acknowledgement packet to increase the reliability but this decreased the throughput at the same time.
