English Abstract

This research focuses on the numerical assessment of the effect of using " sand columns on the stability of earth embankments erected on a soft clay soil foundation.

To achieve the above goal, two approaches were considered they are the finite element analysis and the slip circle method. To evaluate the shear strength parameters for the soils considered in both analyses, a series of laboratory triaxial tests were accomplished on a series of sand samples, unreinforced soft clay samples and a composite samples of soft clay reinforced with a sand column. One of the main objectives is to formulate some empirical relation between the strength of soft clay reinforced with sand column and the strength of the original materials constituting this combination, i.e.

sand and soft clay. The development of such relation simplifies the job to a considerable extent, as the preparation of triaxial test sample of soft clay reinforced with sand column is difficult. The shear strength of reinforced soft clay is needed when a stability analysis using slip circle method is to be carried out. The triaxial tests indicated that the increase in the strength of a soft clay exceeds (300%) due to using sand column technique. On the other hand, this study aims to establish a relation between the value of embankment factor of safety (F.
