English Abstract
In this work, motion estimation followed by motion compensation has been, investigated to reduce the temporal redundancy inherent in the video signal, motion ec-Trmafion were tested" on four different imaee sequences.
The first method is the-Exhaustive Search method (EXS), and the other one is the Multigrain Block Matching (MGB) method.
Implementation results showed that the performance of the (MGB) was better than that of (EXS).
Concerning, direct prediction error (DPE); but it needs additional computation more than EXS method.
The direct prediction error images (also called motion compensated residue images), resulting from, motion compensated predictive coding using Multigrain Block Matching (MGB), are quantized through vector quantization (VQ).
Two proposed vector quantization encoding algorithms are implemented in this work.
The first algorithm uses thresholding technique with fixed codebook and it is called Threshold-Fixed Codebook (TFC) algorithm, and the other one uses thresholding technique with adaptive codebook and it is called Threshold-Adaptive Codebook (TAC) algorithm.
Experimental results concerning PSNR and compression ratio (CR) had proved that the (TFC) algorithm is superior to the (TAG) algorithm especially when three small codebooks, instead of one large codebook, are used to encoding the motion compensated residue (MCR) images and this algorithm called Threshold-3Fixed Codebook (T3FC).
The advantage of (TAC) algorithm lies in its speed because it doesn't need a codebook design.
Therefore time reduction for encoding the (MCR) images is achieved.
