English Abstract

Ferrocement is a type of thin reinforced concrete made of cement -sand mortar mixture with closely spaced of a relatively small diameter wire meshes with or without smooth steel bars of small diameter called skeletal steel. The main aim of the present investigation is to study the behavior of fibrocement I-beam under flexural loading.

Forty eight beams were cast and tested under two point load to study the effect of number of wire mesh layers (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and I4) , beam span (1, 2, 3and 4m), mix mortar (1 : 2 and 1 : 1.5) The behavior of I-beam models was observed by reading the loads and deflections at mid-span of the beams. In this investigation, it was found that increasing the number of wire mesh layers form 4 to 14 tends to increase the cracking and ultimate loads and decrease the ultimate and cracking deflection, and the increase of beam span from 1 to 4 tends to decrease the cracking and ultimate load and increase the cracking and ultimate deflection , and the change of mix mortar from 1:2 to 1:1.5 gives increase in cracking and ultimate deflections and increase in cracking and ultimate load In this investigation an economical comparison between Ferro cement I-beam and steel I-beam under the same load were made, it was found that the cost of fibrocement I-beam is very economical as copared to steel I-beams.
