English Abstract

The main aim of the study is to construct a water treatment compact unit this compact unit is to be fabricated from ferrocement.

The compact unit is circular in cross-section with a height of 3 meters.

The outer diameter of the unit was about 2 meters.

The compact unit consisted of two basins.

The first basin was a gravel-bed, up flow settling basin, while the other was a rapid sand filter.

The compact unit which consisted of two parts was assembled at the Wathba Water Treatment Plant in Baghdad.

The raw water was abstracted from the River Tigris.

Many experimental runs were conducted during the summer of 2002 to examine the appropriateness of such a compact unit in purifying raw water.

Physical, chemical and biological tests were carried out on raw and product waters so as to investigate the suitability of the compact unit.

it was found that the compact unit can remove over 90 % of the turbidity of the River Tigris water.

No presence of any E.

Coli was recorded on samples of finished water (filtered + chlorinated) during the experimental runs.

The capital and installation cost, were calculated and it was found that to produce 1 m3 of potable water cost about 580 Iraqi Dinars.

Other findings and recommendations for the mass production of such water treatment compact unit are presented.

Such unit is recommended for use in rural and remote military camps.
