English Abstract

The need has raised for the evaluation of the performance of the different water treatment plants supplying the city of Baghdad.

This task was undertaken due to the importance of the capital city.

In this study, the physical characteristics of the supplied water as represented by water turbidity were used as a tool to assess the performance of the different water treatment plants.

Sulfate content of water was used as a tool to assess the adequacy of the Tigris as a source of raw water.

In addition, total coliform bacteria counts and fecal cob form bacteria counts were used to assess the Tigris as a source of raw water.

Laboratory data from Amana Baghdad for the period from 1 / 1 / 2000 to 31 / 12 / 2002 were used in this study.

T-test techniques were used to differentiate between the efficiencies of the removal of turbidity of the different water treatment plants.

On the basis of annual average of the turbidity of the raw water, it was found that there was a clear up-ward trend in the level of turbidity with distance down-stream as measured from Al-Karkh water treatment plant.

This was particularly clear in the reach between Al-Karama water treatment plant and Al-Wethba water treatment plant.

The quality of water was found to deteriorate down-stream.

This was believed to be due to the fact that there were many raw sewage out-fall points into the Tigris via storm water outlets.
