English Abstract

The popularity of virtual private network (VPN) has grown rapidly in recent years, especially along with the tremendous growth of the Internet.

It uses the public network such as Internet or Intranet for conducting private communication.

The thesis presents VPN applications and benefits together with the need of small and medium business to maintain and operate VPNs.

The general issues in virtual private networking and the identification of the various ways to implement are also presented.

The thesis suggested a VPN architecture that can be used as a VPN simulator.

This simulator supposed to provide a consistent view of the VPN services over the public network and the Internet.

The designed and implemented VPN simulator has been suggested.

For a prototype network that includes two Local Area Networks (LANs) connected via router.

Object Oriented Programming (OOP) has been used to implement VPN..

Simulator, because of its flexibility with multithreading that can provide such implementation scheme.

The security over such VPN has been provided by a symmetric block cipher type Blowfish that has good features of variable key size and simple implementation and implementation requirements.

Finally, successful operation with flexible client interface has been achieved.

This interface has been simulated and implemented using Java such that all the required information from the client or server manager can be entered very easily.

It also provides view of how VPN simulator operates.
