English Abstract

Geotechnical engineers are familiar with the uncertainties associated with the evaluation of soil properties and inaccuracies in analytical methods.

The use of probability theories to assess risk and reliability of design represents a rational approach and recent contributions have added to the theoretical basis of reliability assessment.

Statistical methods can be of great value to the designer since it is in term of numerical probabilities.

Decisions cannot be avoided but by incorporating the variables uncertainties and consequences directly into the design, the amount of subjective judgment can be drastically reduced.

In this study the probabilistic approach to the design of shallow foundation (Bearing Capacity and Settlement) is introduced.

The uncertainty variables in bearing capacity equation that have been studies are the soil properties (Cohesion! Ancle of Friction, Unit Weight).

The uncertainty variables m settlement equation mat have been studied are (Compression Index, Unit height, Void Ratio).

Also the uncertainty of external applied pressure is taken into consideration for both eases in this thesis teach variable is defined by its mean (μ) and standard deviation (σ) and is assumed to have a normal distribution behavior First Order Second Moment methods (FO-SM) was used, to solve the Approach is approach to numerical Failur of foundation (pf) is more reliable than the traditional or of safety (fs) and hence (Pf) is recommended in this thesis substitute (fs) in the design of shallow foundation A parametric study is made and the effect of each Parameter is studied.

It is shown that each Parameter defined through reliability index (β) has different effect
