English Abstract

Public buses system (buses of General Company for Passenger Transport) is the basic mode for public transportation in Baghdad City.

This system suffers from many problems, part of which is related to bus routes, while the other part is related to the bus and its operators.

These problems have direct effect on the users of public transport buses.

Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate and improve the performance of eight public transport bus routes, represented by Al-Tahrir bus network.

The network services are introduced through operating buses on some routes in different directions in Baghdad City.

The evaluation process of the selected bus routes may be performed by evaluating the level of transit service (LOTS) for seven transit performance measures.

These measures include bus travel time, hours of service during the day, service frequency (headway), and total delay on the route, running speed of the bus, bus occupancy, and capacity of the route.

The process of data collection includes two parts.

The first part is the questionnaire survey, which is used to obtain the percentage effect of each one of the seven transit performance measures on the evaluation of level of transit service (LOTS) for the selected bus routes and bus network.

The second part includes collection of field data to determine the level of transit service of the seven transit performance measures.

The results of this study showed that bus routes No.(72, 36, 13, 114, 11, 30, 37, and 9) are operating at overall LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, D, E, and E) respectively, whereas the bus network (AI-Tahrir bus network) is operating at overall LOTS (E).

It was concluded that the application of some remedial actions will improve the overall LOTS of the bus routes No.(72, 36, 13, 114, 11, 30, 37, and 9) from LOTS (D, E, E, E, E, D, E, and E) to LOTS (C, D, C, D, D, C, D, and D), whereas the overall LOTS for bus network is improved from LOTS (E) to LOTS (D).
