English Abstract

Three main streets were selected to form the study area in the present research, these includes (Al-Rashid, Al-Khulafa and AI-Kifah).

The three streets are located in CBD area, which consists of thirteen intersections.

This area suffers from severe congestion conditions, especially at time between (10 : 00-12 : 00) A.M.

and (1 : 30-3 : 30) P.M.

periods because of many activity centers such as goverment institutions, ministries...etc.

Moreover, it's considered as the main commercial center in Baghdad City.

Therefore, the present study aims to relieve the traffic problems by suggesting several alternatives. Evaluating of the existing condition has proved that the street networks undergos a great deal of deterioration, L.

Therefore, it was necessary to design and examine several alternatives to cope with the existing and future traffic movements through four sequential stages. The first stage deals with the isolated intersections in order to simulate the existing traffic flow and congestion problem at the selected area.

The second stage, involves again the simulation of the existing traffic flow within the studied area by using another computer program.

While, in third stage two alternatives for isolated intersections and six alternatives for coordinated traffic network system are tested.

Finally, the last stage consists of application of alternative number seven after introducing growth factor of (5 %) with two target years 2008, 2013.
