English Abstract

In recent years, there is an increased attention towards converting waste materials and by products into useful materials as neglecting these materials creates environmental problems. This thesis investigates the possibility of utilizing waste concrete, broken cast stones and broken bricks for complete replacement of conventional coarse aggregates.

A part of this work was specified for studying the effect of superplasticizer on the properties of the concretes containing such coarse aggregates. Tests that are carried out on concrete included ; workability, density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, drying shrinkage, absorption and initial surface absorption.

In addition the following properties of coarse aggregate were studied; specific gravity, absorption, unit weight, impact value and crushing value. Tests on the coarse aggregates showed that recycled concrete, cast stone and broken brick aggregates have higher water absorption capacity and lower specific gravity, unit weight and resistance to mechanical actions than conventional aggregate. Test results, generally showed that concrete made with recycled concrete, cast stone and broken brick aggregates show lower density, strength and dynamic modulus of elasticity and higher shrinkage, absorption and initial surface absorption than concrete made with conventional aggregate.
