English Abstract

In this work the general principles of dam safety have been specified and analyzed according to the international standard.

The most important parameters affecting dam failure are discussed and applied to AL-Adhaim dam as a case study.

These parameters include the hydrological, hydraulic, seism tectonic, structural and important design aspects.

The response of the dam to earthquakes has been carried out by using the finite element method.

The program package (Geo-slope) is used for this purpose.

For the effect of earthquake aspect; the generated deformation in the body of dam as a result of the maximum credible earthquake has been checked for critical flow condition as (3.09m) horizontal and (1.05m) vertical of displacement ; this is found to be within the allowable range.

For the hydraulic aspect, the value of seepage below the body of dam and the factor of safety have been calculated and are found to be within the allowable range.

The slope stability for the embankment of the dam has been checked by using the finite element technique and the limit equilibrium methods.

For the structural aspect, the generated stresses in the Body of the dam at the maximum and minimum storage elevations as well as the generated displacement within the same conditions have been calculated and found to be within the allowable range.

A comprehensive study to estimate and evaluate life and property losses in the case of a hypothetical breakdown of Al-Adhaim dam has been worked out; this has been achieved using the results of some previous studies.

An empirical equation is derived for calculating the cost of life and property losses.

An emergency action plan for the event of AL-Adhaim dam breakdown to be applied by the concerned authority has been presented.
